Start with the basics
- Confirm your iPhone has a working internet connection.
- Update SongDuel and iOS to the latest available versions.
- Force-quit SongDuel, reopen it, and leave it active briefly so sync can finish.
- If a specific song has no preview, use its Apple Music button. Apple Music does not supply a preview for every track.
Apple Music connection
- Open iOS Settings and confirm you are signed in under Media & Purchases.
- In the Music settings, turn on Sync Library.
- Confirm SongDuel is allowed to access Media & Apple Music.
- Open Profile in SongDuel, disconnect Apple Music, and reconnect it if authorization has expired.
- Full-song playback and some library features require an active Apple Music subscription.
Disconnecting Apple Music does not delete or sign out your SongDuel account.
Compare controls
- Use the ranking selector near the top of Compare to choose All Songs or an individual Apple Music playlist.
- Automatic song preview is optional and off by default. Enable it in Profile under Compare preferences.
- When enabled, the Preview length control offers 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 seconds per song. SongDuel plays the left song first and then the right.
- Manual playback, leaving Compare, switching views, or putting the app in the background stops the automatic preview session.
- After choosing a song, tap it again to cancel or tap the other song to switch before the pick is confirmed.
- Skip starts a fixed two-second grace period. Tap Undo—or choose either song—before it expires to keep the matchup.
Discover Apple Music playlists (2.0.2)
This feature requires SongDuel 2.0.2 or later. Check the App Store for update availability. Open the ranking selector on Compare, Top Songs, or Insights, then choose Discover. Search for an artist, genre, decade, mood, or playlist name, or tap a suggested search.
- Search results can show playlist artwork, curator, and song count when Apple Music supplies them.
- Choose a playlist with at least 10 available songs to import it as a ranking source. It appears under Recent Rankings in Discover.
- Imported catalog playlists keep a stable song lineup so Apple Music edits do not silently change your comparisons. Use “Update from Apple Music” in the picker when you want the latest songs.
- Apple Music access and an active subscription are required for catalog discovery and import. Results and available songs may vary by region.
Library, ranking, and sync
SongDuel saves picks offline first, so a comparison should not wait for the network. Cloud backup and restore occur separately after you sign in.
- SongDuel needs at least two eligible songs in the selected ranking scope for a comparison. Source playlists appear in the ranking picker once they have at least 10 songs.
- Top Songs and Insights are available immediately from the collapsible Menu. Ranking history fills in as you complete comparisons.
- Use the scope selector on Compare, Top Songs, or Insights to move between All Songs and eligible Apple Music playlists. Generated SongDuel Top playlists are kept out of that source picker.
- Top Songs can show Top 10, Top 25, Top 50, or Top 100. In 2.0.2, the starter Top 10 is provisional and is created automatically in Apple Music after 10 comparisons in a source with at least 10 songs. The same source-specific playlist grows to Top 25, 50, and 100 as each tier reaches 75% ranking strength; ranking strength tracks comparison progress and coverage.
- Open Top Songs → Playlists to find your SongDuel playlists, see their original sources, refresh the collection, and open a destination in Apple Music. If you delete a generated playlist in Apple Music, refresh the collection to remove its saved destination; SongDuel does not recreate it automatically. Your comparisons remain saved.
- Apple Music’s Most Listened Songs remain a separate listening view. Automatic preference sync is optional and off by default; turn it on in Profile when you want SongDuel to read supported listening and favorite signals.
- Enabling Automatic preference sync starts a sync immediately. Frequently played songs receive a small starting boost and are prioritized in upcoming comparisons, while your direct SongDuel picks remain in control. Turning the setting off cancels active preference sync and stops future preference reads.
- You can keep comparing while a large Apple Music library imports. SongDuel makes Compare available as soon as it has enough saved songs and displays live import progress.
- SongDuel checks for playlist-list changes when it launches or returns to the foreground, and refreshes the full library when needed.
- If your daily progress is unexpected, check Daily Goal in Profile. It can be set from 5 to 100 comparisons in steps of five, with a default of 10.
Account and data controls
Open Profile in SongDuel to add or remove an on-device profile photo, replay the tutorial, disconnect Apple Music while keeping or deleting your personal ranking, clear app data without signing out, log out, or permanently delete your SongDuel account. Disconnecting never changes your Apple Music library. Permanent deletion requires confirmation with the same Apple Account so SongDuel can revoke its Sign in with Apple grant before removing associated cloud data, subject to limited security, legal, and backup retention described in the Privacy Policy.
